James Cameron finds himself in a very difficult position these days. Not that his labor of love of 15 years hasn’t proved it was worth every single minute of those minutes that sweated blood through their creative pores. Hell No!  As far as the latest reports go, ( courtesy www.boxofficemojo.com), AVATAR has made US $504,868,451 in domestic collections , and a cool  $1,132,393,758  worldwide.

Together, (advise you to take a deep breath here and have your crucifix handy), AVATAR has made around US $1,637,262,209  since its release on December 18th, 2009 worldwide.  That’s  US $ 1.6 Billion in one month, second only to (yawn) James Cameron’s Titanic’s  US $ 1.8 Billion gross collections, steadily gaining on good ol’  Jack and  Rose.  Its on top of the US Domestic box-office for the 5th week in a row, and the figures seem to be going where no box-office figure has gone before!

Even with the money and the two Golden Globes ( which many see as a precursor for ‘higher recognition’), James Cameron is also busy extending his explanation to the bizarre interpretations and watching with a bit of trepidation the cascading effect of the RDA Combat Amp Suit  footfalls on popular culture.

Its achingly funny when you think about it. China has  announced that the 3-D version is going to be withdrawn from the cinemas, to be substituted with a movie on Confucius’s life ( Chow Yun-fat plays Confucius, seriously).  And can Vatican be far behind?  Vatican’s Official Mouthpiece, L’Osservatore Romano carried a scathing review by Gaetano Vallini, on Jan 10, 2010, “It has a great deal of enchanting, stunning technology, but few genuine or human emotions,”  it said, “Its significance is in its visual impact rather than in the story, and in its messages, despite the fact that they are hardly new.”  It added. Sad, when you think of the cutting edge ‘emotion-capture camera technology’ James Cameron developed to portray exactly that, fell on the blind side of Vatican.

Others have interpreted imperialism, the rise of the US, narcissism, white supremacy, and also hollered downright plagiarism from the classics- more so Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas and the Russian “Noon Universe” series.
Yours truly has this opinion after going through the  3-D ‘religious experience’ of Pandora. With all due respect, it felt like Dances with Wolves on acid. Sure the technology and the attention to the minutest detail of the surreal universe is beyond awe, but as you peel away the layers, as fast as you can, you end up with nothing. Its as if ol’ James put all the classics in a blender and just took what came after the first cycle. Honestly, couldn’t you predict the story from the word go?

Be as that may, there is no way the  pop culture of planet earth can look the other way as the AVATAR juggernaut keeps rolling.

James Cameron has planned for 2 sequels to the movie, buoyed by its success. And the best part of it all, Hustler is planning a parody porn version of AVATAR , tentatively called ‘This Ain’t Avatar XXX’, planned as a DVD release.  Words fail at the global warming effect it could have had if they had planned to release it in 3-D at the  domestic box-office.

And in theaters worldwide, it’s a new dawn in Pandora .
